Bamboo Horse Leaping

  [edit this]

In the early first lunar month before the founding of PRC, Bamboo Horse Leaping was a popular entertainment with songs and dances in Chun'an's villages. The performers, normally classified into red, green, yellow, white and black horses, played male, female, painted face, minor and comic roles. Centered by the black horse, the performance was manipulated by the comic role. During the performance, performers would ride on the horse back with left hand grabbing the horse neck and right hand holding a whip. They acted as if horses were leaping, echoing to drum beat. The team of performers could keep changing its formation as many as 108 types. In 1999, the Bamboo Horse Leaping of Chun'an attended the second China's Seven Ancient Folk Art Performances in Beijing On behalf of Hangzhou, and won the highest honorary prize of Chinese folk art——Mountain Flower Award.

Dragon Lamp Dance

  [edit this]

Dragon Lamp Dance is a significant local custom in Chun'an's villages. The last program of the new year period is this dance, also known as Welcoming Dragon Lamp. The dragon's head is two meters high, three meters long and one meter wide. The carpenter usually places some vertical sticks on a board and produces the dragon's head, thus making it easy to light red candles. The length of the board for the dragon's body is about 1.5 meters with six lamps on it. The lamps are made into various shapes such as vase or fish. The tail is simply treated just like fish tail. The dragon is made up of as many as 100-200 joints, presenting a spectacular view. In the coming dusk, overlooking the dragon lamps from a high vantage allows one to see the dragon sometimes wind its head or tail, sometimes circle the shape of 8, and sometimes display a square formation in company of drum beats, firecrackers and cheerful laughter.

Mu Opera

  [edit this]

One of the 365 operas in China, Mu Opera in Chun'an is a play performed by only one professional theatrical troupe. Originating from the popular Bamboo Horse Leaping in Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty, Mu Opera was based on some minor plays for audience after the leaping performance was over. Performed by male and female roles at first, such show was known as Tri-Point Circus. Later on, a comic role joined for more popularity, thus known as Tri-Point Play. In the sixteenth year of Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, a regular opera troupe called Xu Long Fu put on its performance in Chun'an, Suian and Kaihua, like the well-known traditional plays Growing Wheat on South Mountain and Watching Flower Lanterns. The troupe stuck on the lifestyle of “carrying a pole and walking all over Chun An on foot”, so it was given the nickname Carrying Pole Troupe by the Light Daily. The traditional Mu Opera portraits the real life, reflecting the local pattern in the neighborhood or househood. The key to its popularity is its free, bright, humorous, warm performance as well as full, sonorous and unrestrained voice.
